Northstar Commuter Rail service wasn’t designed to fail, but it’s been built that way.  Rather than solely focusing on the negatives, I’d like to compare and contrast a similar system and how they’re doing things right.

Recipe for Success: FrontRunner

Let’s take a look at a successful example, that is similar to Northstar: The FrontRunner in Utah. It uses the exact same equipment as Northstar.  In fact you may have seen one of the engines Metrotransit bought from the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), before it was repainted:

FrontRunner goes from Salt Lake City to Ogden, a shorter distance but with similar characteristics. At a price tag of $600M it didn’t come cheap, but I feel they did it “right” and would like to highlight the differences.

With the 2012 drum corps season over, let’s talk about the elephant(s) in the football stadium: Drum Corps International (DCI) & Drum Corps Associates (DCA). DCA is probably not an elephant, because there’s a chance you’ve heard of DCI and shrug when I say “DCA.” But we’re talking about sustainability of drum corps as a whole – and more importantly: survivability.

Long before I was into bikes I was into sports cars.  Before all you vegan hippies vilify me, I’ve been working from home since 2008, significantly reducing my carbon footprint, plus I recycle like the dickens.  However, my love of sports cars has ingrained some preconceived notions about what I consider convenient, functional, and stylish.  Having been newly re-acclimated to the cycling “scene,” I’ve found there are aspects of the bike industry that I cannot (and will not) conform to.  Instead, these are my workarounds.

At my age, it’s not often that I get to say this anymore:

I’m too young to remember but… Bike shops back in the day had a mechanic who was also versed in welding and brazing. He may not have been a bike builder by trade, but knew how to add accoutrements to an average bicycle such as eyelets for racks, fenders, bottles, etc. Today that person doesn’t exist in the bike shop, but s/he does still exist, in the form of your local bicycle builder.

Finding the right bike shop is like finding the right doctor, or auto mechanic, or plumber. The list goes on, but really you want to feel like you can talk to them openly (read: ask stupid questions), and trust them.
